Generation Alive Zambia (GAL) together with other implementing partners Plan International, Restless Development, Childline Lifeline, Afya Mzuri and Safaids are working on the project Strengthening Civil Society Organisations for the promotion of a Safe and Secure Environment for Children and Young people. The project is being implemented in 4 districts in Kabwe, Chibombo, Chisamba and Kapiri Mposhi. The objective of the project is to provide access to comprehensive adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, and child protection and increase the participation of young people in planning and decision-making processes.
Activities being implemented on this project are;
SUPPORT HOLDING OF DISTRICT AND NATIONAL ASSEMBLIES
Under this activity, Generation Alive (GAL) supports young people to hold district assemblies in Chibombo, Chisamba, Kabwe and Kapiri Mposhi Districts. Young people are provided with a platform to meaningfully engage with their leaders and other stakeholders and deliberate on various issues affecting them such as low enjoyment of SRHR, unemployment, low education outcomes and participation and present recommendations to policymakers.
GAL also builds the capacity of young people in sexual and reproductive health and rights, policies and laws that relate to SRHR and Meaningful Youth Participation (MYP).
The assemblies are attended by young people, the District Health Director, the Adolescent Focal Point Person, the District administration officer, Councilors, members of parliament, the Health facility focal point person and the District adolescent health focal point person.
MEDIA ENGAGEMENT
The aim of the media engagement in the governance workshop is to build the capacity of media personnel from different media houses on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR), children’s rights and child protection.
Media personnel are taught the legal and policy framework on Children’s Rights and Child Protection as well as the laws and policies included in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC), Zambian Constitution, Marriage Act, Intestate Act and the Education Act.
PUBLIC HEARING
Generation Alive mobilizes young people to hold public hearings with ward development committee, service providers and the community. A capacity-building workshop is held before the public hearing focusing on Meaningful Youth Participation (MYP) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
The hearing is a platform for young people and community members to discuss issues affecting them with their leaders. Leaders present then give feedback on possible resolutions affecting people in that particular district.
